What is vapor barrier installation?
Bare dirt in a crawl space releases a steady stream of moisture into the air under your home. A vapor barrier is a durable plastic liner that covers the ground and stops that moisture at the source.
Many older homes have thin 4–6 mil plastic that is torn, bunched up or missing entirely. Replacing it with a thicker, properly overlapped barrier is one of the most affordable ways to dry out a crawl space.
Signs you may need it
- Exposed dirt in the crawl space
- Thin plastic that is torn, shifted or full of water
- Condensation on ductwork or pipes
- Musty smell in the home
- Pests nesting under the house
What the work usually includes
Remove the old plastic
Old, damaged plastic and debris are cleared so the new barrier lies flat on clean ground.
Install a thicker liner
A reinforced liner, usually 10 mil or heavier, is rolled out with seams overlapped and taped.
Secure the edges
The barrier is fastened partway up the foundation walls and around piers so it cannot shift.
Option to upgrade later
A good barrier is the first step toward full encapsulation if you want to seal vents and add a dehumidifier later.

Vapor Barrier Installation FAQ
What thickness vapor barrier should I use?
For a crawl space you walk or crawl through, 10 mil reinforced plastic is a common minimum. Thicker 12–20 mil liners hold up better to foot traffic and service work.
Is a vapor barrier enough on its own?
It helps a lot with ground moisture. If humid outside air still comes in through open vents, you may also need sealing and a dehumidifier, which is full encapsulation.
How long does a vapor barrier last?
A quality reinforced liner can last 15 years or more if it is not torn up by pests or service work.
